SPC1017 Group 1 Blog (2nd Blog) - Brianna Jean

Hello again everyone! My name is Brianna, and I am a part of group one. This latest project has been tough. I say this because a lot of us, including myself, have been taking care of personal matters that came up. Thankfully, I completed my slides very early, so I was able to get that out of the way. As for the other things we had to do, I found it challenging to take care of because my schedule was absolutely loaded. What made matters worse is when my two-month-old German Shepherd puppy used her razor-sharp teeth to chew through my laptop charger. This set me back in a lot of things and I ended up missing a couple assignments. Thankfully with the encouragement of those around me, I was able to bounce back slowly but surely. I was just in time to turn and revise anything I had to revise for the project. Thankfully, we were able to present our completed project with no issues!

Group one went last this time instead of going first. This gave us a lot of time to gather ourselves and look at the other presentations for the other groups. I would like to say that I learned a lot from my peers that presented before us. They had very creative and engaging projects. They had a lot of useful information in their slides that I never even knew before. They did a great job explaining their topics fully and they provided us with as many visuals as they could. Group 2 had a very cool intro to their project. They had a miniature slide show with a rap in the background describing the events that were related to their project. I was in absolute awe! They did their absolute best to make sure they caught their audience’s attention, and I must give them their props. GIVE THEM THEIR ACCOLADES!

Before my charger got shredded by my terrible puppy, I had to educate myself on the entire topic. I read a couple articles about my topic which was abortion laws. I even watched a lot of YouTube videos and looked at the news to see what they were discussing. After I completed my research, I gathered all the information I could gather, put it on the three slides that I created with some pictures. I also used a video at the beginning of the PowerPoint presentation so others can get the gist of what I was covering. Thankfully, I was able to piece everything together and present confidently.

The topic I covered was abortion laws. I used Texas banning Roe v. Wade as my example. If you are not familiar with what Roe v. Wade is, it is a court case in which the court ruled that the constitution of the United States protects a pregnant woman’s liberty to choose to have an abortion without excessive government restriction. I made sure to emphasize the problem in this situation so my classmates can feel the gravity of this decision. The fact that Texas wants to have stricter rules on abortions is truly sick and should be protested. I made sure to include pictures of women of all shapes, colors, and sizes protesting. I feel like it is important to have that diversity within the picture because it shows how Texas’ decision affects every woman. I also put in statistics to support my statement. “In the calendar year 2019, there were 56,620 Induced Termination of Pregnancy (ITOP) procedures reported for Texas residents, an increase of 4.2% percent from 2018. This figure includes both procedures performed in-state (55,966) and out-of-state (654). This narrative describes these abortions for Texas residents in more detail. Percentages reported here exclude “Not stated” answers in the denominator.”  (TEXAS Health and Human Services)

After I finished presenting, I got to see what my peers’ topics were and the information they had. They choose serious topics to address and highlight the gender inequality issues within each topic. For example, my peer Anthony talked about the lack of protection in professional settings for women. This is a serious problem that happens in a lot of workplaces. Women are constantly objectified and harassed by their coworkers. Anthony continues to tell his audience reasons why women find it hard to speak up about their harassers. For example, His slide says, “Making a sexual harassment claim could end up with the victim being unemployed, and in some cases, even ridiculed by their coworkers or peers.” I like that he mentioned this in his slides because this is usually how women feel when it comes to a situation like this. Another one of my peers, Alicia, covered the gender inequality issues in mental health. Her topic is about how men don’t really get treatment for their mental health more than women and are more likely to commit suicide. Men are always expected to be strong even through the toughest situations while women are allowed to be more vulnerable. In an interview that Alicia had with Victor Martinez, he says, “I believe society has caused that. Men since childhood are always told not to cry because it’s not manly so I feel like they already have that embedded in their brains from a young age. They don’t know anything else. They are seen as weak if they go to therapy or talk about their feelings. For women, if they want to talk about their feelings or go to therapy, they are already seen as emotional.

Thankfully, we all completed what we had to complete, and we all educate each other in the process. The topic of gender inequality is a very serious issue that everyone should know about. Gender inequality affects us all in our everyday lives. We may not notice it but it does and we should find solutions to tackle the issues that we face with them. As for everyone else’s presentation, they had a lot of information as well and taught me a lot about the topics they were covering. By the time the next project rolls around, I will be more prepared and organized. Fingers crossed.
