SPC 1017 Group 1 Alicia Urrutia
I am part of group 1 in SPC1017, and we presented last in our class. Our group worked very fast on our project, considering we did not really have that much time. We all were efficient and fast on deciding work for the agenda and study guide using pictures and diagrams of what everyone is going to do. On my part of the project, I did it based on mental health treatment. If men and women are treated differently when it comes to mental health. Many people believe there is a stereotype when it comes to mental health treatment. Men are always told to not cry because it is not manly of them. Whereas, a girl who cries about her feelings, she is considered emotional. I gave a lot of more information, but I would like to talk about the other groups.

The first group to start off was group 3. The topic they chose was climate change.
I didn’t know that that some issues we have on our planet are due to the result of our own doing. Results of us not taking care of our planet are having droughts which mean no agriculture to eat which can be tough in the small cities surrounding the drought. Another result is intense rain which can devastate cities and leave people homeless. Climate change does not just affect the earth but can affect everything else on it. Climate change can affect our health. It can affect our respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous systems, and mental health. Also, our air quality begins to lessen which can spread diseases through the air and cause infections. One way to stop climate change is by using other things to power electricity instead of using coal, oil, and gas. Ways we can help is not using much hot water or using the drying but instead using cold water to wash clothes and for shower and to dry clothes leave them hanging to dry. I learned a lot from this group and was very blown away by how everything was set up.
The next group was on infrastructure. They started the beginning of the presentation was incredible. The song they chose for it and the pictures they chose and the way, they made the pictures transition was just nothing short of amazing.
What I learned from this group is the infrastructure is split into 16 groups. I was very surprised to learn that the United States of America which is the leading power in the whole world spends a lot less than other countries to make their infrastructure nice and great. China is the leading spender to build infrastructure. While the United States is 13th in spending the most on infrastructure which is kind of sad being the great nation we are. We are spending a lot of money elsewhere versus trying to make our infrastructure greater.
Some problems that the United States is facing is that our infrastructure is not enough for how many people live in our nation. Some infrastructure when it was made it was made for the population of that time. Now the United States has more citizens than ever due to immigration and many people wanting to come into the United States. We lack transportation methods and water and energy resources.
Lastly, group one which was my group I think did a fantastic job. Our topic was on the topic of Gender Inequality. There is a lot of controversy on gender inequality. I decided to do my part on mental health treatment. Mental health problems are among the most important contributors to the global burden of disease and disability. Mental and neurological conditions account for 12.3% of disability adjusted life years lost globally and 31% of all years lived with disability at all ages and in both sexes, according to 2000 estimates.
These conditions are a concern in industrialized as well as in developing countries, where the mental health situation has shown limited improvement, and may have deteriorated significantly in many communities.
Research shows that socially constructed differences between women and men in roles and responsibilities, status and power, interact with biological differences between the sexes to contribute to differences in mental health problems suffered, health seeking behavior of those affected and responses of the health sector and society. Men with mental illnesses are also less likely to have received mental health treatment than women in the past year. However, men are more likely to die by suicide than women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
More is known about differences between males and females in some mental health problems such as depression and schizophrenia than others; about adult men and women than about adolescents and children; and about the situation in industrialized countries than in the developing world.
During adolescence, girls have a much higher prevalence of depression and eating disorders and engage more in suicidal ideation and suicide attempts than boys. Boys experience more problems with anger, engage in high- risk behaviors and commit suicide more frequently than girls. In general, adolescent girls are more prone to symptoms that are directed inwardly, while adolescent boys are more prone to act out. society has caused that. Men since childhood are always told not to cry because it’s not manly so I feel like they already have that embedded in their brains from a young age. They don’t know anything else. They are seen as weak if they go to therapy or talk about their feelings. For women, if they want to talk about their feelings or go to therapy, they are already seen as emotional.
To conclude my blog, I believe all the groups did an amazing job. Not one group messed up or did not give enough information. It was all self-explanatory and yet whatever questions we had, they made sure to answer it to the best of their abilities. My favorite topic was ours, which is gender inequality. My team did an outstanding job like always, especially since we were pretty low on time.
Very good!! I thought I gave lots of time for this presentation.
