Angel Thomas SPC (2nd blog)

Hello ma’am, this is the blog for the second project for our SPC1017 class. This presentation had me almost completely nervous from start to finish. I felt like gender inequality itself is a very tricky subject already, plus I had to specifically talk about sexual violence which is also a touchy subject. April and March were tough months with all the studying I had to do for classes and the tests and exams with the added project that was upcoming made so many things so stressful. I swear I felt my hairline going backwards and my hair greying. There was a lot of times I felt nervous about my classmates, but they were all just master procrastinators and finished everything on time (Ironically, I was one of the few that didn’t present on time. Woops.). Researching this topic was hard because I wasn’t too how I should approach it. Plus while I was researching this I had unlocked a whole lot of unpleasant memories for myself. I remembered my own experience with this sort of violence which just added much more stress. I aimed with making a point that gender inequality can have an influence on sexual violence with masculinity and femininity, and how there is an unfair power balance between the two. Masculine men are taught to be the powerful ones and the feminine women are taught to be compliant. Throughout all the projects I honestly did learn so much about everything, especially my own. I see all the time people saying how gender is an identity and I never really understood what they were trying to say, but after doing the research I feel like I can say that I have a good understanding of this subject. I understand the mindset and how important it is to break away from the norms. I also hope other people can learn about this too because I think it can completely change how men and women view each other. After I had gathered all the information for my project and finished it I was almost excited to present what I had made. For the first time I felt confident about what I had made and wasn’t nervous at all going in. I learned that if you’re confident in your writing and are proud of it you have no doubts about yourself, therefore you can go into a presentation with zero nerves. Honestly this was a big revelation to me since I have always been completely terrified of doing presentations for years. Then the day came to present…and I had completely missed it…. My alarms had completely failed me and couldn’t wake me up. Thankfully, I was given a second chance to present the following class and went through with no issues. (Thank you, ma’am!). At the end of it all I felt so much relief and then it ended quickly because another project was immediately announced plus, we are the soonest to present. I feel like at this point I’m getting very comfortable with presenting to this class, so I don’t necessarily feel much stress going into the next presentation. Overall, pretty tough experience while I did learn so much the added stress was a pain to go through. I would also like to give props to my group to being quick and effective. We learned about the agenda and study guide parts last second and we quickly made a plan and set things up accordingly pretty fast, so good job guys.

I would like to say I knew next to nothing about infrastructure or climate change, so this was a great learning experience. Group 3 went first, and they did climate change. Climate change not only effects our planet but it affects us people too. It brings storms that destroy cities and droughts. Climate change affects our air quality which spreads disease and infections. It can also affect our mental health and nervous systems. A big thing that can help that everyone says, is that we switch to using electricity to power our things instead of gas and coal, and to not use hot water, instead using cold water for showering and washing then leaving them up to dry outside. We have to make changes before our planet has been irreversibly messed up. This groups presentation was the best presented, I think. Everything looked professionally made and they did an awesome job.

Group 2 did infrastructure, now infrastructure I something I knew considerably less about then climate change. They started off with a cool song and video with transitioning slides. Surprisingly to me I learned that the United States of America, which is a pretty influential country and a leading power, spends significantly less than other countries to support our infrastructure. The number one spender that supports infrastructure would be China. We are actually in 13th place when it comes to spending in infrastructure. Some infrastructure has just become outdated because some things were built to support the population at the time. These days so many people are wanting to come to America and our infrastructure simply does not support so many. I believe it’s time we invest more infrastructure, it can also help our economy since the building requires workers and would create more jobs. Repairing brides, roadways, and waterways would address critical agriculture needs. Not to mention our quality of life would improve. If this continues to be overlooked it will cost us.

So in conclusion I believe everyone again did a great job. Gender inequality was the main theme of our groups presentations. A controversial and tricky subject which has caused many debates all over. A topic that I had a real struggle with, but I guess it was a good challenge for myself and had I turned it on time it would’ve been pretty much perfect. I’m starting to find a groove with presenting and I’m proud of my group and everything that we have done. My group and I are ready for the next one.
