SPC1017 Group 1 Blog - Brian Henao
So, my group which is group 1 in SPC1017 did all of chapter 3 and had to explain what it was about. In our chapter 3 project in ,3.1 I learned about what communication was and how to communicate with different cultures. Also understanding that everyone is different in their own way and always to respect everyone’s cultures. I did 3.3b, 3.3c and 3.3h and I definitely learned a lot reading and doing the slides on my sections. It was very cool to learn that depending on the culture you are in; it is possible you view time differently. Monochronic cultures prefer to have things on time and have to have a schedule. While polychronic culture’s view time not as a limit but will finish what they need to get done whenever it gets done.
I also learned in 3.4b how to develop cultured centered skills. Three ways to practice cultured centered skills is to:
1. Practice listening
2. Practice intercultural empathy (which
means try to put yourself in the other cultures shoes so you can understand and
experience what he or she may be is experiencing.)
3. Developed Flexibility (which means
it is the ability to adjust your communication to fit the other persons way of
communicating)
These
three skills I feel are very important especially living in Miami. There are a
lot of different people with different ethnicity and its important to use those
three skills to communicate easier with others.
I was very proud of my group with how we did
on our project. We worked really hard on the project, and I felt like we gave it
our very best. I loved how we worked as a team and would help each other with whatever
it may be. Like if someone needed a book, somebody would send the page that was
needed or of somebody in our group had a question, we would help each other understand
what was happening. I feel like we were very clear with each section we had done,
and each slide was greatly done on what it was about. We gave videos and used
examples of things to better understand each section of the chapter.
I believe the second group did an incredible
job. I LOVE how they made it easy to understand each chapter. They used great examples
like how in the first couple slides of the presentation, I loved how Joseph Fernandez
used examples that I can relate to having a big family. In chapter 9 -1c it
talked about support groups. This I felt is a very important topic and was very
well said by Dylan. A support group is great because you are not doing life alone.
In whatever the situation may be, you have somebody you can rely on that is
going through their own hardships and you guys can help each other through it. You
can give each other encouragement or a helping hand to relieve stress or what
ever the case may be. You shouldn’t do life alone and a support group is an
amazing way to have fellowship and create friendships with others but also a way
to help each other with what is going on in each other’s lives.
Another thing that was shared by
group two was the Psuedo-conflict. I found this interesting and is super true
and has happened to me multiple times. What the Psuedo affect is, it is a conflict
between a group or person that the reason for it is poor communication. The other
group can agree with what the other group is saying but the reason why they do
not agree is because they did not explain clearly what was being said. That is
what leads to disagreements and what is called the pseudo-conflict. So, for me I
always try to explain things right so we don’t get in disagreements, when it is
possible that they would be in agreement with me.
Group three also in my opinion did
amazing as well. Group three did chapter 10 and did a fantastic job presenting
it. Their slides looked amazing and was very well done. 10.3a was some great
stuff to start off. The slide talked about identifying and defining a problem
in a situation. It is important to get everyone on the same page in the group
so everyone can understand the problem or issue. One of the biggest things is
to find the main source of the problem. Why? The reason why is so that the
issue or obstacle doesn’t happen again, and the group can avoid it in the future.
Once you find out what the main issue may be, confirm that they all understand what
is going on and have them draft it to see if they are on the same page. Once everyone
is on the same page analyze and research the problem as a group. Separate your
group into smaller groups to do specific tasks to save time and to get an
answer faster for the problem. Think and plan ways to fix what the problem may
be together as a group so you can over come what every the issue or obstacle
that is a problem. Lastly after the group finishes and finds the answer now a
decision has to be made. The group should vote to give everyone a fair chance. That
is some great stuff I learned in these couple of slides because if I ever have situation
where if I am in a group, and there is disagreements I can settle it by using these
steps given in these slides.
In my opinion everyone did an amazing
job. I didn’t know what to expect doing a group project in a college setting since
I have never done one, but I really enjoyed it and was very proud of everyone
not just in my group but everyone as a whole. We all are busy and have stuff
throughout our days that are important but we were able to deliver amazing
presentations. Very proud of everyone and am excited to do next project with my
group again.
Yea excited for the next project. Excellent reflection!
